About

A little about me

Hello and welcome!

My name is Nicky Robertson – this is me – and I am the person behind Angel Editorial Services. I’m a freelance proofreader and proof-editor based in West Yorkshire in the UK.

I have been a post-graduate student (I have a PhD in Medieval Studies from the University of Leeds), a seminar tutor and exam marker at the Universities of Leeds and Sheffield and a librarian. During this time I wrote and delivered numerous conference papers and have even had a few articles published, most notably in Anglo-Norman Studies 28 (2005).

After leaving academia in 2010 I went for a complete career change and worked as a contractor in financial services for almost a decade. I started with banking complaints before being promoted to a Quality Checker, ensuring that others were doing things properly.

Today I am building on over two decades of working on my own publications, looking over articles for friends, marking undergraduate essays and exams, and checking and correcting letters sent out to customers. They say the devil is in the detail, well I love the details so I’m not sure what that must say about me!

I recently joined the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading (CIEP) as an Entry Level member working my way upwards and completing their Proofreading training.

  • BA (Hons) Ancient & Medieval History, Royal Holloway, University of London

When I’m not working

You can usually find me curled up on the sofa reading, thinking about what to cook for dinner, playing with my nephew, deciding on my next craft project (patchwork and knitting are my go-to hobbies), or pottering around in my garden.

I’m a fan of Golden Age detective fiction and you’ll find Margery Allingham, Georgette Heyer, Gladys Mitchell, Dorothy L Sayers and Ngaio Marsh on my bookshelves snuggled up alongside some fantasy from Garth Nix, Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett.

That’s not to mention the entire bookcase dedicated to history textbooks covering everything from Ancient Egypt to Early Medieval Europe and beyond.

These are some of the things I’ve read and enjoyed lately:

  • Circe, Madeline Miller
  • The Heroine with 1001 Faces, Maria Tatar
  • Pandora’s Jar: Women in the Greek Myths, Natalie Haynes
  • Orfeia, Joanne M Harris
  • Heart Stones, James Nash
